Lewes Herriot Interview

I stumbled across this nifty little interview with our resident artist Lewes Herriot
last week, a FUSED magazine article from June this summer just gone. Don’t know how we managed to miss this one, but better late than never!

…Lewes Herriot is as fundamental to the thisistmrw brand as the bands and DJs we’ve been booking for the past 6 years. His distinctive style has evolved from watercolour hybrids to etchings and to what currently look like still frames from some alternate reality award-winning anime series; always featuring his own wild creations, always telling some sort of abstract story In their own right. Nearly every artist we have ever hosted has commented on his designs, and it’s little things like this which have helped keep our gigs thriving for so long.

The 60+ posters he has illustrated for us over the years have been so popular with audiences that, on the night of the gig, we often find ourselves without any physical copies to pin up within the venue, as they always get nabbed off the walls, presumably rolled into handbags or trouser-legs as we can only imagine…

All of his work for us, along with his prolific artwork for bands like Johnny Foreigner, Tubelord and even Top Shop – not to mention an even more impressive portfolio of stuff he’s created simply for himself (with prints available to buy – so stop stealing our posters!) can be found at his sites HERE and HERE and HERE

In the meantime, we’ll look forward to more and more jaw-dropping posters, an exclusive comic/art combo with Johnny Foreigner’s forthcoming album, and of course that elusive Lewes Herriot graphic novel/children’s book, which the world needs more than he’ll ever know!

Gig News – PETE & THE PIRATES return in September

After an over-capacity show in Room 2 at the Hare & Hounds earlier this summer, Reading-based anthem factory PETE & THE PIRATES are returning to the Hare this September as part of their second tour in support of their well-received second album, One Thousand Pictures.

With riffs almost reminiscent of Hefner’s awkward pop-punk and vocalist Tom Sanders belting them out like a young, much cooler Tim Booth (without the rainbow rhythms or crustiness you’d associate with that terrible terrible descriptive reference), P&TP knocked us sideways in May, and we look forward to having them – and indeed their impressive local fan base – again on September 28th.

Support comes from a reformed and revitalized THE BOMBERGS, – whose awesome post-new wave anthems may be placing them head to head with P&TP in the full-on-pop-chorus dept – and notoriously well-loved local noise monkeys (and now INDIETRACKS veterans) ACE BUSHY STRIPTEASE, who are like one half Bearsuit-esque madness VS one half female-fronted Dinosaur Jr… Needless to say this should be an awesome show!

The Home Stretch – Mohawk Down EP

This week sees another tasty free download release from local DIY label Giant Manilow Records – their second offering from solo-gazer The Home Stretch. Listening to these six joyfully dark and atmospheric tracks – coming in at under 15 minutes – brings to mind both the stranger side of The Shalfonts’ recent output and that fuzzy melodic hum you might associate with past collaborators and close friends of the label, Gentle Friendly. You can almost hear a Giant Manilow sound forming across their roster here, which is no bad thing. With The Shalfonts’ main man Bryn Bowen providing guest vox on two tracks and the EP’s opener using an unreleased Flamingo Flame riff as a backing track, it’s fun to see a solo artist openly collaborating rather than hogging the audio-space to themselves.

Thisistmrw Mix.15 – Greg Bird

Having to quickly throw this up on the blog in time for the planned antics this weekend, I’m essentially PR’ing myself here, so I’ll keep it short -

This is a small mix of the sort of house tracks I’ve been really into this past year, some of which have inspired the rhythm and feel of my forthcoming solo EP, off of which I’ve snuck a cheeky rough/instrumental exclusive here

On Saturday night me and my guitar-man Danny will be attempting a live-behind-the-decks hybrid, mixing my own stuff into other people’s stuff, and then going back-to-back with This is Tmrw residents Matt and Carl…If you’re reading this then this Saturday there is only one place to be, so get yer arse down to the Bulls Head and get in on what we’re calling “a monthly work out to the dance sounds of tmrw”

( Come and say hi on the ol’ Fb event page too )

01 Pierre’s Pfantasy Club – Dream Girl (Greg Bird Edit)
02 Mia Hesterley – Spark
03 Art Department – Without You
