TITP002 – Matt Beck interview

In the second installment of our podcast series, we talk to Thisistmrw head honcho Matt Beck.

Having started last month, our podcast series, will explore the local music scene and look to interview local producers, promoters and talent, whilst our mix series continues…

This week, Carl Finn and Greg Haines discuss with Matt how Thisistmrw came into being… from early forays into music promotion in Solihull, to meeting Thisistmrw artist Lewis Herriot at a shoegaze gig and subsequently beginning to cast the net further afield…

NYE w/ Waifs & Strays

This Saturday This is Tmrw will be seeing off 2011 in style in The Hare and Hounds small room….We’re excited for this for a number of reasons, firstly – the majority of our shows have been hosted their this year and secondly we’re joined by one of the hottest producer combos of 2011 - Futureboogie’s  Waifs and Strays!

The intimate small room at The Hare is one of our favourite spaces because of it’s unique intimacy and bang on soundsystem and this year has hosted some of our best shows included Neon Indian, Pete and The Pirates, Dutch Uncles & Gardens and Villa.

For those of you who’re after a taster of what to expect from Waifs and Strays, you can check out their latest mix on the Yes List site right here

Tickets for the night aren’t far off selling out so go grab one right here

New Shows.: Casio Kids (Moshi Moshi Records)

Our first show of 2012 sees the return of one of the best bands to grace the ‘This is Tmrw stage’……Casio Kids.

They’ll be returning in promotion of their first proper debut record on Moshi Moshi and having listening to the record, we can safely say it’s packed with a full arsenal of pop gems taking in everything from twisted disco, twee pop, afrobeat and blissed out electronics.

Casio Kids have always tore the roof off at This is Tmrw and for this show, we’ll be introducing the band to The Hare and Hounds main room, which houses one of the cities best P.A’s for a venue of it’s size…..Needless to say….It’s gonna go off!

I don’t say this lightly when I say they are hands down the most enjoyable band to watch live.

Support comes from Swim Deep & New Carnival.

THE HARE AND HOUNDS V2
WEDS NOVEMBER 9TH

GARDENS AND VILLA – http://gardensandvilla.bandcamp.com/

Signed to the mighty Secretly Canadian records (Which is a seal of approval in itself…Anthony and The Johnsons, Jens Lekman, JJ, Yeasayer, Magnolia Electric Co..), Santa Barbara’s Gardens and Villa will be bringing big hooks and summer vibes to the UK for the first time in Nov. Take the pop sensibilities of early Blur, put it through a 80′s synth and then imagine them covering Talking Heads ‘Speaking In Tongues’ record and you come close to capturing the sound of G & V.

ALBUM REVIEWS..

FLY MAG ’4 / 5′ – ‘A delicate, smoky slice of romance that marks the Santa Barbara Quintet out as next in line to Grizzly Bear…Utterly Stunning.

VICE MAG – 7 / 10 – Languid and Dreamy pop songs that sound like a spooky Shins.

PANDAS AND PEOPLE – http://soundcloud.com/pandas-and-people

Since bursting onto the live scene about 12 months ago, Pandas have developed into one of Brum’s most exiting prospects. Now with the album recorded, the band have hit the live circuit developing their left of centre alt sound into a tidal wave of melodies and harmonies.

Gig News – PETE & THE PIRATES return in September

After an over-capacity show in Room 2 at the Hare & Hounds earlier this summer, Reading-based anthem factory PETE & THE PIRATES are returning to the Hare this September as part of their second tour in support of their well-received second album, One Thousand Pictures.

With riffs almost reminiscent of Hefner’s awkward pop-punk and vocalist Tom Sanders belting them out like a young, much cooler Tim Booth (without the rainbow rhythms or crustiness you’d associate with that terrible terrible descriptive reference), P&TP knocked us sideways in May, and we look forward to having them – and indeed their impressive local fan base – again on September 28th.

Support comes from a reformed and revitalized THE BOMBERGS, – whose awesome post-new wave anthems may be placing them head to head with P&TP in the full-on-pop-chorus dept – and notoriously well-loved local noise monkeys (and now INDIETRACKS veterans) ACE BUSHY STRIPTEASE, who are like one half Bearsuit-esque madness VS one half female-fronted Dinosaur Jr… Needless to say this should be an awesome show!

The Home Stretch – Mohawk Down EP

This week sees another tasty free download release from local DIY label Giant Manilow Records – their second offering from solo-gazer The Home Stretch. Listening to these six joyfully dark and atmospheric tracks – coming in at under 15 minutes – brings to mind both the stranger side of The Shalfonts’ recent output and that fuzzy melodic hum you might associate with past collaborators and close friends of the label, Gentle Friendly. You can almost hear a Giant Manilow sound forming across their roster here, which is no bad thing. With The Shalfonts’ main man Bryn Bowen providing guest vox on two tracks and the EP’s opener using an unreleased Flamingo Flame riff as a backing track, it’s fun to see a solo artist openly collaborating rather than hogging the audio-space to themselves.
