Bergen’s Casio Kids are no strangers to This is Tmrw shows – Infact this will be the 3rd time they’ve played for us, so to mark this momentous occasion, we asked Ketil to do us a mix with what they’re listening to at the moment. I think it’s fair to say, it’s an amazing selection of tunes from the punk funk krautrock of Can through to the neo soul of Sa – Ra and a timeless classic in Inner City Blues.

Casio Kids play the Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath on Thurs May 27th. £5 Admission.

Floating Points & Joy Orb mixes

Amongst a slew of booming mixes I’ve feasted on recently, there are two mixes that stand out for me. Since announcing their arrival with Hyph Mngo and Vacuum Boogie [although Esthian III was top] respectively, it seems a Joy Orbison and Floating Points still know how to make a real good old school mixtape banging out some timeless soul and disco.

BSRkR01 has been knocking around for a while, you can get a copy over at Discobelle. Following his dreamy sounscape sound,  it is a downtempo mix of 80s soul, the type that just on the right side of fromage Alicia Myer’s ” I Want to Thank You”, noughties shouty space funk James Pants’ “We’re Through” and some newer cuts.

Floating Points “My Plastic People” over at XLR8R – coasts through a masterful collection of some of the finest oft overlooked disco, soul, latin and jazz to have drifted across the Pond over the last 30 years. Highlights abound – Larry Heard, Deniece Williams, Esther Phillips and Gil Scott Heron, I could go on…

Greg Bird and Flamingo Flame EP – Free Download

Our very own Greg Bird has unleashed the beast (don’t worry – i just mean his first EP) Shruburbia on the rad Speech Fewapy label, what more it’s available for free download on the Speech Fewapy website.

The EP is a smorgasbord of the best 80′s genre’s – think electro funk, shoegaze, goth and just straight up pop. Our personal favourite is Wonderland which made it’s way onto my Sungazer mix over in the mixes section.

The EP is totally free so what are you waiting for!!! Click the album artwork below..

It’s at this point in the post where i conveniently point out that both Greg Bird and Speech Fewapy are involved in our next show….We are bloody stoked to be welcoming back Casio Kids to Bham on May 27th for our first ever show at the Hare and Hounds…A full post about the gig will follow.

I have a nasty habit of going on and on about music that I think “people should listen to,” usually to the point of my unfortunate victim’s eyes glazing over, resulting in them making an excuse to leave me babbling to myself.

Frequently the poor soul who has to put up with me blathering on will say something along the lines of; “Yes, Andy I’ve heard it,” which I will pretend to not hear so that I can still attempt to hold the authority in the conversation, trying to impress with a fact about the artist in question, I picked straight from Wikipedia that that person probably already knew or, couldn’t give a monkeys about.

This doesn’t come without Karma though. Usually these ramblings are fuelled by alcoholic consumption that leave one with a hangover of seismic proportion and thus feelings of self loathing, worthlessness and crippling fits of cringing during the following few days.

Apologies in advance to anyone who will now have to hear me blathering on about this mix I’ve made for the good folk of This is Tmrw. This playlist features 14 tunes by artists that I have at some point bored someone to tears about.

Don’t let me put you off though, the tunes are all great! Promise!

1) ‘Nothing But Flowers’ by Talking Heads

Did you know Johnny Marr plays on this? Oh, well you know who’s on backing vocals don’t you? Yeah, that’s right Kirsty MacColl. She did a version of…yeah, Billy Bragg, yeah. Did you..yeah, yeah, Jet Ski.

2) ‘Can’t Stop Now’ – Major Lazer

You know MIA? Well the guy that did her stuff, Diplo, right…..

3) ’11th Dimension’ – Julian Casablancas

He could have made an amazing EP. He should have just saved the decent songs for a Strokes album. No I haven’t heard Nikolai’s stuff, is it any good? Oh no, not sure if anyone has really.

4) ‘Wishing Well’ – Terrence Trent D’Arby

Apologies to Geoff from Scarlet Harlots for talking his ears off about how much they now sound like Terrence Trent D’Arby.

They don’t.

5) ‘The Man in The Iron Mask’ – Billy Bragg

Seeing Billy Bragg in 2008 was a near life changing experience for me, for which many people have had to suffer for since.

6) ‘Jackie’ – Scott Walker

Apologies to anyone who had to hear me wax lyrical about the film ’30 Century Man’ after I watched it.

…and he’s got this percussionist guy, punching a huge side of pork like duff duff duff duff and Scott Walker is like can you do it more duffduff duffduff. I mean, you’d never know it was a pig listening to it.

7) ‘Twat’ – John Cooper-Clarke

You know, the one who’s in that Joy Division Film, ‘fucking’ this, ‘fucking’ that.

8) ‘Main Title From “The Carpet Baggers” – Jimmy Smith

….honestly he IS incredible. He was like the Hendrix of the Hammond Organ.

He wasn’t.

9) ‘Burden of Shame’ – UB40

We don’t celebrate this album enough as Brummies, no seriously, forget all that Red Red Wine crap, this was proper, proper reggae.

10) ‘Poison Dart’ – The Bug ft. Warrior Queen

I usually wheel this one out if ever I feel people might be labelling me as ‘indie’.

Idiot.

11) ‘We Are Water’ – HEALTH

They were the first band I saw at ATP and they were amazing in like this totally scary but like awesome way.

“Yes Andy, we were there. We watched them together, remember?”

12) ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes?’ – Fairport Convention

This one is dedicated to anyone who has to suffer me blurting on about Moseley Folk Festival every time something vaguely folk related crops up in conversation .

13) ‘Haitian Fight Song’ – Charles Mingus

I got into him after he was composer of the week on Radio 3….Yeah, I listen to Radio 3 I do. I find Classic FM just a bit too… commercial y’know.

14) ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’ – Kris Kristofferson

I have been mocked for claiming Kristofferson being one of the best songwriters ever. The album that this was taken from is to my memory the only one I have managed to recommend to my Dad that he told me he liked.

I manage to grind people into submission eventually…
